Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
